What is Poker? Detailed A-Z Poker Guide

Poker is such an essential game in the world of gambling that one can’t deny its importance. No matter which online or physical casino you visit, you will find poker games everywhere as innumerable gamblers play them.

What is Poker?
What is Poker?

The game originated from North America and is the most popular there. We have assembled our guide play poker, where you will get all the knowledge you need about the poker game, including all its rules and the best sites online casino Malaysia to play online poker (for free and to bet with money to win prizes).

What is Poker?

Poker is a card game played in various forms in different parts of the world. This game includes a deck of 52 cards. Due to its popularity in the United States, poker has become the national card game of America and has effectively immersed itself in the American culture.

In this game, the players must call the bet (match), raise the bet (increase), or concede (fold) to win the game. They include four suits: diamonds, spades, hearts, and clubs. All suits value the same.

Poker Rules

You will find numerous poker games and their variants. Although countless variants have different rules, they all have the same essential features. A poker hand consists of five cards. It can’t exceed this limit.

The value of the hand depends on how unusual the combination of cards the player holds. The more unique the combination is, the higher the hand will rank.

Before you play this game, it would be better if you read up this poker guide infographic about the game and how it works. This will help you come to an intelligent decision when you playing this game.

In our guide, we will discuss two poker game types and the rules you need to follow to play the game. It is up to the players to bet that they have the best hand, and other players must either call (match the bet) or concede.

Players can also bluff by betting that they have the highest or best hand when they don’t have it. They may also win by bluffing if the other players (possibly with superior hands) don’t call the bet.

Generally, poker is of two types:

  • Stud poker
  • Draw poker

The rules of these two games are pretty similar. In stud poker, just like we mentioned, each player is given five cards (in some cases seven). Players then assess the strength of their hands and bet chips according to it.

The player who bids the most chips wins unless or until another player is willing to match the winning player’s bet. If that happens, the two or more players with the bet will show their cards. The best hand among those will win all the chips.

In draw poker, each player is also given five cards, and the players start to bet one by one. The remaining players can bet to improve their hands by trading as many as three cards for different three cards from the deck.

A player with an Ace card can trade all four of their other cards if they want to.

General Rules

The general rules include:

  • 2 to 14 players, but an ideal number of players are 6, 7, or 8 players.
  • The objective of the game is to win the “pot.” This means the aggregate of all bets made by all players in any one deal.

The pot can be won by having the highest-ranking poker hand or by making a bet that no other player has made or called. These general rules apply to almost all variants of the games.

In addition, the rules mentioned above and in guide casino rules headings apply here as well.

The Ranking of Hands in Poker

In our guide play poker, it is important to learn the ranking of hands. The following are the ranking hands in poker from the highest to the lowest value:

The Ranking of Hands in Poker

a.    Royal Flush

The best and the highest-ranking hand is the Royal Flush. This combination is pretty famous with cards formed by straight ten to the ace of the same suit. All the suits are equally ranked. The Royal Flush is unbeatable, but the odds of being dealt this hand is as high as 1 in more than 600,000 deals. Example: 10♠ J♠ Q♠ K♠ A♠

b.    Straight Flush

Straight Flush is rarer than four of a kind and carries five consecutive cards of the same suit. This hand doesn’t carry any ace. Example: 9♣ 10♣ J♣ Q♣ K♣

c.    Four of a kind

Four of a kind means being lucky enough to deal with four same-numbered cards with four different suits. Example: 5♣ 5♠ 5♥ 5♦ 9♣

d.    Full House

A player having three same-numbered, different-suit cards and a pair of another in the same hand is called Full House. Example: 5♦ 5♠ 5♥ 9♦ 9♠

e.    Flush

When a player hand has all five cards of the same suit, it is called a Flush. If two players have a flush coincidentally, the player with the highest card in that suit will win the game. Example: 1♥ 3♥ 5♥ Q♥ K♥

f.      Straight

A player having a hand of consecutive cards with different suits is Straight. If multiple players have straight, then the hand with higher cards wins. Example: 9♦ 10♣ J♠ Q♦ K♥

g.    Three of a kind

When a player has any three cards of the same rank, a Three of a Kind happens. Example: A♣ A♠ A♥ K♦ Q♥

h.    Two Pair

When a player has a pair of cards of the same rank and another pair of the same rank, it is Two Pair. Players with Two Pair have to show the cards to see who has the highest pair to win. Example: A♠ A♥ K♠ K♥ Q♦

i.      Pair

Any two cards of the same rank form a pair. Example: 4♦ 4♥ 3♦ K♠ 6♣

j.      High Card

If there are no combinations, then the highest single card in a player’s hand is valued. If players have the same high card, then the second-highest card will help break the tie and determine the winner. Example: 5♣ 8♦ 10♥ Q♠ A♣

Bet limits in poker

In our next section of guide play poker, we have bet limits. Usually, people play with a limit on the game to enjoy it more.

There are different ways to fix a bet. A limit is necessary to not give any wealthy player an unfair advantage. Once a bet limit is set, it is unalterable. But if the players unanimously agree to change the stakes, it can be done. Some popular limit systems in games are:

Fixed Limit

None of the players should bet more than a fixed limit of the number of chips, e.g., 2, 5, 15. Generally, this limit depends on the stage of the game. In draw poker, if the limit is 10 before the draw, it could be 20 after the draw.

In stud poker, if the limit is 10 in the first four betting intervals, it is 20 in the final betting interval. It is often 20 for players with a pair or better showing.

Pot Limit

Any raise or bet is limited to the chip number in the pot at that time. A player who raises may count as part of the pot the chip number required for the player to call. For example, if there are 7 chips in the pot, and a player makes a bet of 4, the total chips become 11.

Four chips are required for the next player to call, making the pot 15, and the player may then raise by 15 chips. Even while playing pot-limit, there is a maximum limit defined, such as 60 chips.

Roodles or Whangdoodles

In a fixed-limit game, one hand of a round of hands in poker is played after a high hand appears (full house or four of a kind, etc.). Then, one deal will be played by each player of jackpots, where everyone’s antes double, doubling the betting limit for these deals, too.

Poverty Poker

In this fixed-limit game, a maximum limit is applied to the number of chips a player can lose. Each player takes out one stack at the start. If they lose this stack, the banker issues the player another one without any charges.

Usually, the player can get a third stack for free without dropping out of the game. (There should be a limit on the number of free stacks so the player will play the game carefully.)

Table Stakes

The limit is the number of chips present in front of every player. If the player has 20 chips, they may bet no more than 20 and may call any other player’s bet to that extent.

In table stakes, a player may not withdraw chips from the table or return their chips to the banker until they leave the game. A player can add chips to their stack but only between the completed deal and the starting of the next deal.

No Limit

In these games, there is no betting limit. But no-limit games are rarely played now.

Limit on Raises

Almost every game played today carries a limit of the number of raises at each betting interval. However, this limit is invariably three raises per deal.

Time Limit

Before the game starts, the players have to set a time limit for when the game should end. They should stick to this time limit. Violating this rule could result in an unpleasant gaming experience.

Usually, when the time for the game to end nears, a player or the host would chant “three more deals” or “through Zane’s deal”. This tells the players about the number of deals left to think of new strategies to win the game.
